Richard Comely worked as a sign painter, crest designer, clothing designer, portrait artist and graphic artist before creating and publishing Captain Canuck from Winnipeg in 1975. He married his wife Evelyn that same year and they are the parents of seven boys and one daughter. Richard also created and published Star Rider and the Peace Machine. He has written and illustrated children’s books, greeting cards, for advertisements, for newspapers and magazines, including the Calgary Herald, Toronto Star and Time Magazine. He created and produced two syndicated newspaper features Trumpet and Wabbits. The weekly children’s feature Trumpet was carried in over 65 newspapers in four countries. He has taught drawing since 1989. Richard helped design the one year post graduate course in comic book writing and illustration for Mohawk College. He has also worked in video and film production. His Drawing from the Pros video was a best seller in the educational market in Canada and the United States. He designed and manufactures the ComelyCrane, DV Dolly and Steady Freddy (www.camcrane.com) which are sold around the world. He is working with Fadi Hakim and others on exciting new ventures for Captain Canuck including the Captain Canuck animated series and a feature film with Minds Eye Productions.
Richard Comely was born in Oxford, England on October 9, 1950 and came to Canada with his parents in 1953. He has lived with his family in Manitoba and Alberta. They moved to Ontario in 1985. Richard and Evelyn moved to Welland, Ontario in September 2013.
